Küche - 1959 Gebr. Mathieu - kitchen

Die Firma Gebr. Mathieu

The firm Gebr. Mathieu was founded in 1946 in Frankenthal.
Until the mid 60s they were well-known for their doll kitchens,
toy shops and big dolls furniture.

1959
In Swantje Köhler's dictionary is a catalogue photo of exactly the same kitchen -
that is why I am sure of the exact year of production.

The upper shelves and cupboards can be removed for easier storage.

Beautiful pastel colours, large sliding doors and an open shelf
between kitchen and dining space create an inviting toy for every little girl.

This Schildkröt girl is about 30 cm (11 inches),
as tall as a Barbie, accordingly the kitchen is huge.

This kitchen was made in many variations,
but all in this big scale. My kitchen is the largest one.

1962

The dishes on the table are collectibles of the 50s -
every time you bought a packet of pasta you got one piece of it.
Each is marked with the pasta firm's name: Funck.

The doll kitchen by Mathieu serves to prepare a meal,
eat and clean the dishes - no cooker and no fridge though.

I decided the Schildkröt doll should have both,
too, from the same time, in an appropriate scale and matching colours
- blue of course. It took a long time.

So, jetzt kann auch gekocht werden ...
Alright, now the girl can cook ...

... and reward herself with a cold drink.

Mathieu stellte Holzspielwaren her,

Cooker and fridge could be missing in this wooden kitchen
because they were made of tin traditionally.
Mathieu worked with wood only,
there were other special firms who worked with tin,
e.g. Fuchs and Göso. Many cookers could be really heated -
many old cookers with burnt cooktops are the proof.
But why take tin instead of wood for the fridge?
How can you play with a fridge?
Store ice cubes in it to keep the composition bottle of milk cool?
Some of the older tin fridge look like they were used in that way though.

  2. Beautiful kitchen ! And in the 1/6th scale ! I am in awe of your miniature sets ! The red ones on the shelves (they are not plastic, are they ?), the two oval fruit dishes (pink and cream, are they Funck too ?) and obviously your Funck sky blue set... I have been wondering for a long time what these were (thanks for enlightening me) and have tried to acquire a set with no success so far...

Hi Ysé - the red sets are the same but one of it has small dots as far as I remember - so I put both sets on the shelf. The oval dishes are Funck, too, yes,
and a funny source of origin have these so-called "Margarine-Figuren", as they were given to you for promotion when you bought a tub of margarine - ...or coffee or or or and even in the 50s the collectors' fever for completing a series broke out, I guess. More and more firms ordered these plastic pieces and gave them to their customers - and then it quite suddenly stopped, I believe, due to an very clever agreement of most firms to stop this madness because when everybody does it nobody gains anything out of it. So sadly for the children and the later collectors this hype finished at the beginning of the 60s.
