Jutta Boguts Lundby Museum in Christiansfeld

Eine Sammlerin aus Dänemark - A collector from Denmark

Jutta wrote to me at the beginning of this year about her Lundby collection exhibited in Christiansfeld, a city that was build by the Moravian Brothers from Herrnhut. The city came on UNESCO's list of the World heritage in 2015.

The Lundby Collection in the
Søsterhuset
Haus der Schwestern - House of the sisters

In May I met Jutta in Christiansfeld and she was my guide when I was taking photos of her Lundby collection. We spent the last month taking better photos (Jutta) and translating her house descriptions (me).

Jutta:
"Lundby dollhouses followed how the world looked in the adult world in Scandinavia.
How the people lived and how the colors were in the rooms back then."

Aber nun beginnt die Führung:
But now the tour begins:

Lundby nr. 1 Søsterhuset

1

 1

This house may be older than 1957. But in 1957 the oldest Lundby dollhouse is documented.
The couple Grete and Axel Thomsen started their toy factory in Lundby, Sweden, in 1947 with making doll furniture, and at some point between 1947 and 1957 they began designing dollhouses.
The house has a saddle roof, a spiral staircase and there is no electricity.  The wallpaper is the original in a reasonably good condition, as we have to remember, it was a toy that was played with extensively. Back then, leftovers of ordinary wallpaper were used. The real dollhouse wallpaper will come later. The four similar large windows in the house have no glass or frames. The curtains I have made myself.
The furniture is Lundby furniture from the same period that the house was sold as far as I could find them, otherwise they are as close to the period as possible. Possibly there is one piece or another by a different maker from the same period. The carpets are not by Lundby.
The kitchen furniture is stuck on a plate at the back, and a plate with everything intact is very difficult to find today. Notice there is no fridge, it was only common in the 60s. Also note the cabinet with a sliding door, so you can choose to watch TV or play the gramophone.
The Christmas tree is as old as the house, and has a star made of thin metal wire. It has weathered away over time.
Knud Knudsen of the Moravian Brethren has made the "Herrnhuter" star and the holder which is fixed outside the house. The Moravia Brethren were originally from Herrnhut in Saxony and they used the local building traditions that made the city of Christiansfeld so special.

Lundby nr. 2 Søsterhuset

 2

 2

Lundby / Lerro house from 1963.
Saddle roof, spiral staircase, original wallpaper but still no extra designed dollhouse paper. No glass or frames in the windows, beige painted floors, and still no electricity.
The house was bought at an internet auction in Stockholm. The previous owner had sewn the curtains. I have added the carpets on the floor. The furniture is, as far as I have been able to find it, from the same period that the house was sold. The furniture in the bedroom and the large living room are in rococo style. There is also a small fine writing table in the same style.
The rococo style will accompany Lundby for the years to come. It is France's presence in Sweden right back since 1818 (The Bernadotte dynasty takes the Swedish throne), which effects also the style of furniture.
The TV has a small round stick that fits into a hole on the table so you can turn it and get the best view on the TV where ever you are sitting. Of course, it is still a black and white TV.
The kitchen has a cupboard with sliding doors. It was only produced for a short period. Notice the fridge, which is now the greatest dream of every housewife.
The clock in the bedroom is from the same period as the house.
I have added some little knick knacks.

Schwarz-Weiß-Fernseher. Die Blumenkrippe ist neu.

 Model Gothenburg 1964-66.
The model has a different roof than the previous houses. The split-level living room on the 1st floor is also new. This house model will become the typical Lundby dollhouse and will last many years. The wallpapers are original (adult size). Almost all floors are blue painted. The windows on each side are oblong narrow, without glass. There are no windows in the bathroom and its front room. This model is finally electrified.
An simple staircase leads up to the large living room. Instead of railings there are wooden strips from floor to ceiling. This was in the highest of fashion at that time.
There is a broad opening from the dining room to the anteroom of the bathroom. The anteroom is just like some sort of reception area. The bathroom floor is light orange / brown, the walls in the same room are yellow with painted tiles.
The furniture is from the same time. Curtains and carpets I have made myself, except the yellow carpet under the coffee table which is Lundby.
Sofa, armchairs, coffee tables and lamps are very typical of the design in the real world at that time. The phone is becoming more commonplace in private homes.
Black and white TV. The flower stand is new.

Lundby nr. 4 Søsterhuset

4

4

 Model Gothenburg 1971.
This model has legs. The early versions of Gothenburg had some strong wooden strips under the house, where you could screw the legs in. The legs could be bought separately and were manufactured until 1973.
In the early 70s many different new Lundby houses were sold.
The house is prepared for electricity, the original wallpaper is in good condition and windows have "glass" and frames. Lundby now also sells curtains.
The windows have got a nice, square size throughout the house.
There is a door from the middle room to the bathroom. There are no windows and no front room in the bathroom anymore.
Original carpets are on the top floor and the middle room downstairs. Staircase with wooden strips on the right side (covered by the wardrobe). All furniture is from the period the house was sold.

Now the colorful period of the 70s begins just like in the real world. That is what is so characteristic of Lundby: furniture and accessories correspond to what "The Great World" likes at that time. Lundby follows fashion in interior design in Scandinavia. This will be even more obvious in the years to come.
I think this is partly the reason that Lundby has existed so many years. In fact, four generations have been able to play with Lundby houses and furniture.
New is the colourful kitchen, the wardrobe unit, the red furniture in the middle room downstairs and in the upper room to the right.

 Lundby nr. 5 Søsterhuset

5

Model Gothenburg from the early 70s.
There are no frames or glass panes  in the windows. At this time, Lundby had just begun to make windows with "glass" and frames. You could now buy single frames with "glass", so that you could update an older Lundby dollhouse.
The wallpapers are the original and very well preserved. All floors are original, too, with orange-red floors in the upper and lower floors. The floor in the middle has blue-painted floors.
The curtains were sewn by the previous owner's grandmother and they are incredibly beautifully made.
The staircase has now got a handrail in white plastic. We still follow the furniture fashion of the real world. Just look at the red leather furniture, it was also available in black leather.
I was fortunate to find a kitchen in lime green, not so common a colour. The kitchen table with yellow legs and orange-yellow tabletop in laminate in the pattern "Virvar" designed by Prince Sigvard Bernadotte is also all the rage out in the big real world.
The blue peasant furniture in the middle room is called "Leksand", which we will see much more in the future. The bathroom suite is yellow and the tiles are red. Obviously we are in the 70s.
On the lower floor is a furnished sauna, and a very practical one, because one can just cool off in the sea outside. All furniture is from the same period as the house.
In the guest room we see red-orange furniture of the latest fashion. Pipi Long-stocking is on the colour TV from 1972, a novelty by Lundby.

Lundby nr. 6 Søsterhuset

 6

In 1974, Lundby starts to sell dolls of its own brand. The dolls and the furniture in this house is all from Lundby, made at the same period as the house.
On TV there is a program with 2 people in red clothes.

They can be seen on the wall in the upper living room, where there is a window with a view painted on the wallpaper. Here the two frogs are sitting on the window sill and look at the world.
In the middle living room on the lower floor there is a picture painted on the wall showing a door that leads to the garden.
The book can still be purchased. On the title of the book is a picture of a Lundby Gothenburg and a Lundby Stockholm house.
At the top left of the dollhouse there is a small room with sofa bed and pine cabinet, sewing table with chair and sewing machine. The sofa furniture in the living room is in pink velor, with a glass table.

Lundby nr. 12 Søsterhuset

12

Model Gothenburg 1992-98.

The house is bought at Thy Legetøj. It had been an exhibition house and was sold at a reduced price. The house was mainly furnished with the things that were sold with the house; but I later managed to find a curtain for the living room that had the same fabric as the sofa set.
We now see the rococo furniture in a brown color. The kitchen has a microwave and coffee machine. Kitchen table with white chairs. The table is set for lunch. The bathroom has white sanitary facilities and pink tiles.

Lundby nr. 13 Søsterhuset

 13

Modell Stockholm 1976-83.

 13

Model Stockholm 1976-83.
The basement floor is of 1979.
Lundby launched a new model, which they produced at the same time as model Gothenburg. Stockholm was a so-called luxury house. It was also called Dallas.
The house has 3 floors, in the basement there is a recreation room, a garage with a blue car with room for a riding horse at the rear.
In the recreation room there is the so-called Leksand furniture (Swedish peasant style) and a table tennis table.
In the bathroom there is also a washing machine and an ironing board.
In the large living room there is a novelty, the dining table with chairs and matching coffee table for the leather furniture.
The middle blue room has a sofa set with white period furniture with yellow striped fabric. Model Royal. It was sold from 1978.
In the children's room on the top floor on the left there is a bunk bed.
All furniture in the house is from the period 1976-83, so you can see some of the furniture in Gothenburg houses. I have added the wine bottle and small cups in the middle blue room. Artistic freedom!
For the houses, a façade could be purchased that covered the two upper floors and one that covered the basement floor so that they could protect them from dust. In the facades were windows and doors.

Model Småland. 2006-10.
The new owners of the firm Lundby retained the original asymmetric design of the Gothenburg dollhouse; but renamed it Småland.
New beautiful wallpapers, new furniture, new carpets, pictures, new dolls, new lamps have been added again.
New kitchen and new furniture in the children's room in the basement.
There are simply so many things to choose from for a new dollhouse owner!

Frohe Weihnachten!

Småland 2013-?
It is the same house as no. 16, but here the garden is seen in winter, new in Lundby's assortment, and the house is decorated so that you can see that Christmas is approaching.
There is a new sofa, new small tables in front of the sofa, a new stove with Christmas socks hanging and waiting for Santa's visit. Santa Claus is standing on the balcony. The Christmas tree has an electric light chain.
There is a gingerbread house on a small green table. Mother and daughter enjoy sitting on the sofa with chocolates in a box on one of the small tables. All Christmas presents are new from 2013.
Out in the kitchen, father and son are about to finish the Christmas baking.
Maybe they should all get out in the snow and get some exercise. Skis and ski sticks, and a toboggan are certainly out there. Snowmen and a pile of snowballs are also new.
In the dining room there is a music system with Blue Tooth, so if you want, you can make it play Christmas music! So Lundby is still up to date. Knud Knudsen from the Brødre congregation has made the Herrnhuter star in the living room.
Merry Christmas!

Model Stockholm 2011.

Model Stockholm 2011.
The new company has also made a new edition of Stockholm  since 2005.
To date, there have been three editions of Stockholm. Since there is no room for them all in this exhibition, I have chosen the house from 2011.
It is a two-storey house with swimming pool which can be pulled out from under the house. The swimming pool is on a "stone-paved" terrace. There is also a roof terrace with a balustrade. On the right-hand side of the house there is a staircase to a small terrace, outside the bedroom. Another staircase leads up to the roof terrace.
The company has developed a whole set of new furniture, dolls and accessories for Stockholm, but it is intended that you can mix furniture from Småland and Stockholm as you like.
Otherwise, just enjoy the sight of all the new things.

Lundby nr. 19 Søsterhuset

Modell Gotland. 2009-11.

Model Gotland. 2009-11.
In 2009 a holiday home was the novelty, but it was only available for 3 years.
A really nice little cottage that you can play with from all sides. There is a living room with 2 beds, a fireplace that can be operated from both sides, a small kitchen area with a folding table and two chairs. When the table is folded up against the wall, a dartboard is painted on the underside. There is a stove, refrigerator and drawers in the furniture at the back of the wall. Under the couch there are drawers for storage. To the right of the house is a doghouse with a resident, a mini vegetable garden and a parrot on a swing. A red cat also belongs to the family.
On the left side of the house there is a covered room with garden tools and plants. There is also a toilet and a shower at the rear.
On the back there is an outdoor kitchen with wash basin and a wicker chair hanging on a chain in the ceiling, the fireplace warms nice on cool evenings.
In their ads they have arranged the cottage as if it were a family with children living there. I have made it to the grandparents' cottage, where the grandchildren can come on a visit.
It's simply too small for a family with children. After all, it is the homeowner who decides who will live there!

Eine Sammlerin aus Dänemark - A collector from Denmark

Hello Puppenstubensammlerin.
My name is Jutta, I am a woman of 70+ years and I have been collecting doll-houses for many years. I regularly read your blog and it has been a great help for me, when I have bought some dollhouses with furniture in.

I live in the southern part of Denmark about 50 Km. from the border to Germany (Flensburg).
This part of Denmark has belonged to Germany until 1920 so a lot of the old dollhouses and the furniture are from Germany.

The last years I have collected many Lundby dollhouses. So many that I could not have them in my home any longer. I live about 6 km from Christiansfeld, a city that was build by the Moravian Brothers from Herrnhut. The city was founded in 1773 and in 2015 it came on UNESCOs list of the World heritage.

We always had a lot of tourists in this area, but now there are even more and from very far away. I have been working as a city guide until 2010. When the city worked on being a UNESCO city, the Moravian vicar said to the papers: We need something for the children. So, I asked the museum of the Moravian, if they would be interested in my collection of Lundby dollhouses. I have 20 dollhouses covering the period from 1957-2017, all different. They were interested.

December the 11th, 2018 we had a great opening and People like it very much, because Lundby dollhouses followed how the world looked in the adult world in Scandinavia.
How they lived and how the colors were in the rooms back then.

In the house from 1957 there is no fridge, because a normal housewife did not have a fridge back then. My latest house from 2017 has a stereo sideboard with Blue tooth, so with the help of a smartphone, you can get music in the dollhouse.

I am a member of “We love Lundby club”. It is an international club of Lundby collectors, there are 85 members and I am the only member in Denmark.

All the houses have furniture etc. from the same period as each house was sold.
As you can not buy the older things in the shops, I had to find them in secondhand shops, flea markets and on the internet.

I do not know, if this has interest for some of your readers, or if you would tell about this on your blog.

My wish is that a child can come here with her mother, grandmother and even her great grandmother, and they will all be able to show the child, how they lived when they were children. So, it is both entertaining and educating. Also, the collection will be of interest to collectors.

Here I can give you a link to the Christiansfeld Center, which is in the Sisters House,

here there are different exhibitions concerning the city and here the museum also have some exhibitions, among them my Lundby collection.
